Why is VAT Important?

VAT feels hard—and may be hard on your health

For people with HIV, visceral adipose tissue (VAT) may be very important to consider. At normal levels, VAT is not an issue. However, having too much VAT may make it hard to perform certain physical activities and it may reduce your quality of life. Excess VAT may also be associated with serious health issues, including:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Insulin resistance
  • Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular disease

Healthy living can help, but more may be needed

When HIV is under control, you can focus on healthy aging. This includes regular exercise and a healthy diet, which may be able to help lessen excess VAT and help lower blood fats (ie, cholesterol).

However, VAT is a hard fat in more ways than one: people who are treated for HIV may find it difficult to manage excess VAT with diet and exercise alone.
